Overview

The Caribbean Energy Transition for MSMEs initiative is a multi-year project funded by the Inter-American Development Bank. It is designed to support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in adopting energy-efficient practices and integrating cleaner production methods. By enhancing sustainability, this initiative aims to improve business competitiveness while reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the region.

At the core of the project is an interactive online energy audit tool that will allow businesses to assess their energy consumption, identify areas for improvement, and implement practical solutions for more efficient operations. Alongside this, MSMEs will gain access to targeted training on energy management, sustainability, and voluntary sustainability standards (VSS)—equipping them with the knowledge and resources to transition to greener business practices.

Key Project Components

  • Online Energy Audit Tool
    • A user-friendly platform to help MSMEs evaluate and optimize their energy use.
    • Guidance on adopting cleaner production methods to enhance sustainability.
  • Training & Capacity Building
    • Comprehensive training materials on energy efficiency and sustainability best practices.
    • Expert-led workshops to equip MSMEs with practical strategies for adopting green energy solutions.
  • Technical & Advisory Support
    • Consultancy services for tool design, survey execution, and training content development.
    • External audits and evaluations to track project impact and drive continuous improvement.
  • Marketing & Outreach
    • A regional awareness campaign to drive MSME participation.
    • Promotion of the business benefits of energy efficiency and sustainability.
  • Project Coordination & Implementation
    • A dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU) to oversee activities and ensure smooth execution.

Why This Matters
MSMEs make up over 70 percent of businesses in the Caribbean, yet many face challenges in adopting sustainable energy practices due to limited access to information, tools, and financing. This initiative will help businesses reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance the region’s climate resilience by providing practical solutions, expert guidance, and a supportive ecosystem.
